So after weeks of falling into old habits of spending my days go go go with very little down time, Myself and Tom took a little city break to Amsterdam. I booked the flights through Aerlingus, just for comfort and I was glad i did. The flight is only 1 hour 20 minutes. Friday morning I dropped Rhys to school, got my hair blowdried and then headed to the airport for my flight. By 4.30 we were in Amsterdam. It was just so hassle free.
We stayed in Room Mate Aitana, it was a great hotel in the perfect location. https://room-matehotels.com/en/aitana/ We were basically a 10 to 15 minute walk to Dam Square which on some occasions took us a couple of hours as there were so just many cosy pubs to stop off in for a quick G&T. The hotel itself was spotlessly clean, modern and staff provided a high level of service, we opted for a late check out on the Sunday as our flight wasnt until 5pm so we were able to do some sight seeing without having to rush back to check out.
Because we only were staying 2 nights our time was limited so to get the most from our trip we had to choose wisely what to do.
On Friday when we arrived we just explored, made our way to Dam Square. Its a really cool city, full of life. We had really good steaks in a small restaurant we found. Then we went to Ripleys Believe it or Not and did the tour. We had a few scoops on board at this stage and had a total laugh doing the tour I would recommend this its fun.
The next day I had pre booked tickets to Ann Frank house it was brilliant, so worth a visit and I really feel if I hadn’t made it to there I would have really missed out, in fact I’m thinking of reading her book.
We bought a 24 hour pass to a boat and took a cruise around Amsterdam, this was the best thing we could have bought we used it right up to when we were leaving on Sunday afternoon and it gave us a great insight into Amsterdam the driver of the boat was pretty witty so we had a good giggle, it was so relaxing.
We also visited the Heiniken Museem, I had prebooked tickets however we still had to queue for about 20 minutes and it was freezing. I wasn’t really impressed and I would rate the Guinness Storehouse as a much better experience.
We visited the Red Light District, when to the museem of prostitution it was good to experience, I was surprised at how small the Red Light District is, it was good to see and sure you can’t visit Amsterdam with paying it a visit.
We had a bit of a hooooleyyy in a bar called Lost in Amsterdam if you are there its worth a visit their cocktails are to die for, there was a lot of smokers there and we had a good laugh at seeing all of the munchie food being service, tonnes of chocolate cake and ice cream sundaes, we stuck to the cocktails and were happy out. https://lostinamsterdam.com/
Sunday it was time to go home, we didn’t need to be at the airport until 3pm so we made the most of our last few hours by taking in a cruise, having a delicious breakfast and strolling around eating donuts. It was bliss so relaxing.
I would recommend a visit its a great destination if you aren’t up to a long stressful flight, there is something for everyone but most of all its a great place to press the pause button, enjoy the culture and relax.
